COCO CHANEL

According to USA TODAY, 'New books channel Coco Chanel'.

After watching a film on her life I could only imagine the impact books will have on the readers young and old. "Dead 38 years, Coco Chanel may be more influential in contemporary popular culture than rival designers still very much alive, at least judging from bookshelves and movie screens."

Coco Chanel inspires me today. This woman had a vision worked toward making it a reality. Today, it is hard to find real authentic originality. At times, I wish I could go back in time to pick the brains of people like Coco and ask them "How?" and "Why?"

Too often I look at the times we live and find us at a stand still. I miss those times when the country was on fire with new fashion, technology and educational ideals. I guess this is apart of the process until the next 'new thing' emerges on the scene.

More importantly, I wonder what my role will be in the Library and Information Science field. What can I contribute to a discipline 'beyond original set boundaries' . I know with time it will come, but I know from watching Coco Chanel, that it begins with a vision, belief in yourself and of course failure.

Coco oh so eloquently, displays faillure as an out of place inseam in need of a needle and thread- simple. All you need in life is a vision that supports a people in need and a team that believes in you.

I do not know what my calling is within the field of Library and Information science, but I do know I am willing to discover it along my educational journey.

Peace and Blessings

This has been on my mind all week....

So, I have this assignment where I am suppose to post on my blog throughout the week, however I wrote in my journal instead, so Im getting use to the writing on my "blog" thing...

As I digress, earlier this week I read an article within Publisher's Weekly pertaining towards Young Adult Literature. Here's a piece from the article:

'Caldecott Medalist David Small’s graphic novel-style memoir, Stitches, became a 2009 National Book Award finalist in the Young People’s Literature category—which has led to some discussion and debate, along with the usual congratulations.'

Within my Collection Development and Management course we have been debating this "to be or not to be Young Adult Literature" ideal. Of course you have those that feel that young adult literature should include subjects that are "PG" rated- period. Then you have those who believed that if a young adult wants to read a book on any "explicit" topic it should be written in a format specific so that age group can interpret. And, of course you have those in the middle.

I am personally tired of all the strict 'boundaries' we place within classifying Young Adult Lit. His memoir depicts incidents that occurred, which were not so pleasant, but they happended at a young age. So, why is it that even though such dreadful things happend to youth across the nation and throughout the world, but how dare authors write about such happenings and classify it as Young Adult Literature.

Who are trying to protect, Young Adults, parents, administrators or librarians? Studies have been proven and every human has experienced the dreadful occurrences of adolescence. This is nothing new, and yet we still want our young adults to close their eyes and ears to this reality.

I just want us to stop nit-picking on things that don't matter! Young adults are reading and becoming empowered by such stories- END OF STORY.

What in the BLOGGIN'?

Okay, so who would have thought I would be creating and non the less write a blog. NOT I! For some reason I alwasys resented blogs. I found them to be a waste of time and involve so much energy. I never understood why people would want to read the thoughts of another individual.

My mental model of Blogs immediately changed after doing this assignment. I discovered that blogs are really cool! They offer a wide range of information and support from collegues within various careers. As I was reading one of the Librarian blogs, I notices that each reported attending conferences throughout the nation as well as their experiences.

I have way more respect for blogs then I did in the past. They are really like an online community either getting informaiton out to the masses from a personal and or informational perspective.

Im kind of hooked now. There are so many blogs out there. I would have never been exposed to such a vast amount of information within my field of Library and Information Science if I would have never given in to such an influencial technological service.

I once heard a celebrity say that everyone is in desperate need for being heard and having a voice, which is why youtube and blogs have become so popular. I still don't know how to feel about this. I believe that, yes everyone is searching to be heard and use such references as vehicles to do so. That is where it gets sticky....

I love reading information that is factual and useful. Rather is be personal or researched experience, if it does a community some good, then why not.

Well, let us hope that this is the beginning of something productive and useful.

Peace and Blessings
